Tom Bombadil by ullakko Tom Bombadil by ullakko
Tom Bombadil is a character in the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

"Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! Fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!"

(The Fellowship of the Ring)

I wish they had shown him in the movie, even though I know there's probably no time to fit him in one movie... :O
I think Bombadil's a great and mysterious character! I wonder what race he is - is he a dwarf? Does anyone know?

Thanks for commenting!

I did some research when I was making this illustration, and it seems that Bombadil's race is none of the most common ones (he's not a man, a wizard, dwarf, or anything like that)... Tolkien doesn't give a direct answer to this in the books or elsewhere, other than that he is somewhere mentioned to be "the oldest and fatherless". It's been discussed afterwards, that Bombadil might be one of the ainur, some free spirit or even the Iluvatar himself.. He is a powerful character, anyways, more so than it seems at first glance.

I like the character, nice balance with earthiness and joy with an unsolved mystery..
Very interesting!
Yes, I remember he was mentioned as the "Eldest". Tom Bombadil is a mysterious character!!

Oh, yes, I was so sad about the fact that he didn't make it into the Jackson's trilogy, even though he wouldn't suit that much into the epic mood of the films~ Anyway, as always, your vegetation is flawless. I like the palette - it's so cozy, perfect! c:

Great picture but I expected his costume to look more royal by how I had imagined him.

Thanks! I never thought of him as the royal type, but that's an interesting view. (:
You captured the mirth in Tom Bombadil wonderfully. A bit silly-looking but wise beneath, and a great companion, that's exactly how I picture Tom and what I see in your illustration of him. Pretty picture!
